In June 2006, MemNor AS was created as a Public Private Partnership between the Norwegian Institute of Recording Sound (NIRS) in Stavanger, Norway, together with Memnon Audio Archiving Services SA from Brussels, Belgium.

Choosing the Public Private Partnership approach is also an integral part of Memnon and NIRS’ thinking, which advocates pooling private and public resources to accelerate the preservation of a heritage which is in extreme danger of being lost.

This partnership was established to offer archiving services and ways to make Memnon's resources and expertise available throughout Scandinavia in order to provide the best possible care for the Nordic audiovisual heritage.

MemNor Audio Archiving Services

MemNor offers institutions with audiovisual collections a range of services: to digitise, restore, preserve and provide access to classic and current sound recordings, on any format.  From Sami field recordings on fragile analogue tapes, via Beethoven string quartets on early 78rpm to DAT-recordings. We are dedicated to preserving these important cultural records for future generations.

Our service is suitable for a wide range of archive owners – from cultural institutions, libraries and universities to record labels, archive websites, radio archives and private collectors. We provide a professional, high-quality and cost-effective service, that combines innovative techniques, in-depth experience of sound processing and databases, professional research in archiving standards, and optimised production process.

We offer secure long-term storage and indexing of sound archives, making digitised sound archives available either for public access or for access by a specific target audience.

We also provide assistance with obtaining external funding for long-term preservation and access of sound archives.

Together, MemNor and Memnon have offices and studios in Belgium, France, Germany, Norway and the UK, which makes us one of Europe’s key players in the audio archiving field.

MemNor, there for Nordic Memory Minimize

The name MemNor:

MemNor refers to our core interest: Nordic Memory, or the safeguarding of the Nordic sound heritage. It also alludes to both parent entreprises, the Norwegian Institute of Recorded Sound and Memnon.

The name Memnon:

During the Trojan War, Memnon, son of Eos, came to the help of the Trojans. When he had to confront Achilles, their respective mothers, Eos and Thetis came to plead their sons' cause before Zeus. Memnon fell and Eos asked Zeus to grant him a special honour. Zeus accepted and offered Memnon immortality.
